Hemp Product Questions
Hemp is a type of plant in the cannabis family that is primarily cultivated for its fiber, seeds, and oil. It is a tall, fast-growing annual plant that can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) in height.
Hemp has been used for a variety of purposes for thousands of years, including as a source of fiber for textiles and paper, as a source of protein-rich seeds for food, and as a source of oil for industrial and medicinal uses.
One of the distinguishing features of hemp is its low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound that is abundant in marijuana, another member of the cannabis family. Hemp typically contains less than 0.3% THC, while marijuana can contain anywhere from 5% to 30% THC. Hemp contains higher amounts of the cannabinoid CBD.
CBD is short for cannabidiol (pronounced can-uh-bid-i-ul). Cannabidiol is one of about 110+ cannabinoids (plant compounds) that can be extracted from the hemp plant’s flower and leaves (not to be confused with the oil that comes from hemp seeds which does not contain any cannabinoids). Hemp can often be confused with cannabis, but the key difference is that hemp contains less than 0.3% of the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
THC Is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis that gets you “high.” Hemp is very low in THC and rich in CBD. CBD does not get you high, but it does produce mind-body relaxing effects and comes with a variety of other therapeutic benefits.
People use CBD to support their overall well-being in many ways. Some may need help with really specific issues while others use it for general well-being. Here are some of the reasons our customers have used CBD:
Relieve physical pain and discomfort
Maintain healthy sleep cycles
Manage anxiety and everyday stresses
Support a sense of calm and focus
-
Support healthy digestion
We love reading positive stories about how our products provide people from all walks of life with the balance and support needed to live the life they want instead of the life they're used to.
While we believe CBD can support your wellness in many ways, you have to understand this is still a young industry, but encouraging research is emerging all the time, and we can’t wait to learn and share more with you in the future.
High potency: on average, our products are twice as strong as leading brands. You need more CBD to actually feel the difference.
Whole plant hemp extract: Research shows that using the whole plant maximizes the benefits delivered throughout the body and provides additional wellness components. In sticking with our mission, we keep all the good stuff, the way nature intended.
Full Spectrum: all of our products contain THC below the legal limit. They don't get you high, but they produce a stronger effect than THC-free or CBD isolate products. This is known as the Entourage Effect (more on that below).
Third Party Lab Tested: Each of our products has been tested by third-party laboratories for purity and quality. You can check the results for all of our products here.
Full spectrum means that the product contains all of the available cannabinoids from the hemp plant including trace amounts of THC. All of the compounds together produce what’s known as the Entourage Effect which is shown to provide more therapeutic benefits compared to Broad Spectrum (THC free) and just CBD alone (CBD Isolate).
Whole Plant Extract is the closest thing to the hemp plant’s natural state. It is full spectrum (contains trace amounts of THC) and has a higher concentration of minor cannabinoids, terpenes, vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and antioxidants.
Most other CBD products are lighter in color and taste because they are more processed, and this process removes many of the nutrients and antioxidants. Other products don’t contain THC, or even worse, only contain CBD and nothing else.
Hemp is a miraculous plant. It's the only plant that can clothe, shelter, feed, and heal you. Whole plant extract means you're getting all of the healing benefits that the entire hemp plant has to offer.
In a 2015 study, researchers found that, in comparison to CBD Isolate, Full Spectrum CBD offered higher levels of relief.
This is what’s known as the Entourage Effect, when all the different compounds produce a greater effect together than they could on their own.
This is because cannabinoids like CBD, THC, CBN, CBG etc. are synergistic, meaning they can't do their job without one another. It’s kind of like baking a cake. All of the ingredients work together to make a delicious end result. If you leave out an ingredient or two, you still might get a similar product, but it won’t be at its best.
At TrueNorth, we believe that our customers deserve the highest quality product, and the most effective version of CBD there is to offer. That's why we only use full spectrum cannabinoid rich hemp extract in all of our products.
CBN is a cannabinoid found in hemp plants like CBD, and like CBD, it is non-intoxicating. CBN research is relatively new, but there are indications it has properties that make it perfect for sleep formulas.
All of our hemp products are single-origin. Like food, we believe it's important to know where your CBD comes from. Our current products are all made from hemp we grew on our small farm in New Jersey.
Next season, we will be partnering with another small New Jersey farm run by an expert cannabis cultivator, and we can't wait to share the details with you.
There’s no universal dose of CBD because no two people are exactly alike and different factors can impact how your body processes CBD. Dosage is different for everyone and may take some time to figure out, but it’ll be well worth it.
Each of our CBD oil tinctures comes with a dosage card with detailed instructions that include dosage levels specific to each bottle.
The most important thing with CBD is consistency. Find a time of the day when CBD fits into your routine and suits your needs. Most people take CBD in the morning or 30 minutes before bed.
Our CBD Is stronger than most so start slow and follow these general instructions:
If you've never tried CBD before and/or have mild symptoms we recommend starting with our Low Strength or Full Strength tinctures.
Start with 1 full dropper. If you don’t get the results you’re looking for after a week, double your dosage. We recommend taking it consistently for 3 weeks before making a judgment.
Some people feel the impact immediately, but it can take 3 weeks for CBD to build up in your bloodstream.

Use CBD daily to experience greater, longer lasting relief.
Generally speaking, you may experience the more subtle mood, sleep, and stress moderating effects of CBD at lower doses (25mg - 50mg). Higher doses (75mg - 100mg) are more likely to make you relaxed and sleepy and good for more intense issues especially around pain.
Play around with it, and see what works best for you. For example, to try to manage pain without getting sleepy, you can take smaller doses multiple times throughout the day.
Consistency is key as it can take time for CBD to build up in your system, and remember, the effects of CBD are generally subtle.
Take note of changes in your overall mood and sleeping patterns.
Are you able to better manage stress? Overall, do you feel more balanced and even-keeled? Less anxious? Are you sleeping throughout the night? Is the pain no longer at the very forefront of your mind?
The benefits of CBD oil are subtle and increase over time. After consistent use, take note of the issues you don’t notice anymore, rather than what you do notice. That’s how you know it is working.
Yes! Hemp-derived CBD, like ours, is federally legal thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
Store our products in a cool, dry, dark place, and they’ll have a shelf-life of at least a year.
It depends on what you’re using it for and the severity of your symptoms. Each bottle of our CBD oil contains 30 full droppers. We recommend at least one full dropper daily so a bottle will last you 30 days.
However, you may find, for example, that you only need a half dropper of our Sleep CBD:CBN Oil at night. In this instance, a bottle will last you 60 days. In general, they typically last at least a month.
Our gel caps are formulated to last two months but may go quicker if you need some extra support.
Our hemp balm typically lasts a month or longer as well, but again, this heavily depends on the severity of your symptoms.
Yes, it’s unlikely but definitely possible. All of our products contain THC. Although there are only trace amounts and not enough to get you high, you can still fail a drug test from consistent use. We recommend talking to your HR department if you’re concerned.
If you are taking any medications, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to using CBD products. For the safest and most effective use of CBD, use all-natural CBD products with verified third party lab tests from a trusted manufacturer like TrueNorth.
Using high-quality CBD with professional medical guidance is the best way to make the most of your CBD products.
No! Our tinctures are mixed with MCT oil which becomes carcinogenic when heated.
Yes, we’ve given our own pets CBD oil for anxiety and pain, and we have specific tinctures for dogs. The CBD oil for small dogs can be given to cats as well but they may not like the peanut butter flavor.
If you’re interested in giving your cats CBD, we recommend starting with a ¼ dropper (6.25mg) of our Low Strength CBD Oil.
We’re looking into developing CBD treats for pets and hope to have a product in the near future. Stay tuned!
Yes, you can use the tinctures as a topical for skin ailments or pain. Just fill the dropper to the desired amount and massage directly onto the skin.
While they are effective, the tinctures are not specifically designed for use as a topical so we do recommend trying our salve. We will be adding more topical products like lotion in the future.
Sorry, but no. Our products contain less than 0.3% THC which is the legal limit. THC is the psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant that produces a “high.” CBD can produce mind-body relaxing effects, but it is completely non-psychoactive.
They are similar but not the same. They’re both cannabis plants, and both interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), but that’s it.
Typically, marijuana is very high in THC which gets you “high,” while hemp is very low in THC and rich in CBD. Hemp and hemp-derived CBD is federally legal.
Yes, all of our current products are derived from hemp that we grew organically on our farm in NJ. No pesticides were used in the process. Our farm is no longer operating, so we’re in the process of searching for a small farmer to partner with that is USDA organic certified.
We will always only source hemp to make our products from a single location and ensure that it is grown organically. We will share more about our new partnership once the agreement is finalized.
All of the materials used in our products are naturally gluten-free, cruelty-free, and vegan except for our pain relief salve. Our salve contains beeswax and ethically sourced Emu oil which has been used as a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory for hundreds of years.
All of our products are derived from hemp we grew organically and sustainably on our small farm in NJ. Our hemp flower is then brought to our lab partner in Maryland to extract the oil. No distributors, retailers or other middle men are involved in the process.
